Broadly speaking the focus of research degrees has increasingly been on the humanities and cognate social sciences, particularly on the subjects of human rights, globalization and development, politics, and Commonwealth history.

Research Degrees (MPhil/PhD) in Finance and Management study towards the University of London PhD. This joint PhD programme delivered in partnership with the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa will coordinate a programme of work in heterodox (feminist) economics or political economy that focuses on the way in which mutually reinforcing tendencies of climate breakdown, financialisation, and post-pandemic economic and social pressures affect multiple dimensions of wellbeing, including the institutions, norms, policies and practices conditioning daily life in Africa.

The PhD in Development Economics is a research degree offered by the Department of Economics and is also part of the PhD pathway, 'International Development', within the Bloomsbury Doctoral Training Partnership. The latter forms one of the few Centres recognised by the UK's Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), thereby receiving financial support, and especially individual grants, for MSc and PhD students.

In MPhil/PhD Economics students whose qualifications indicate that they are able to pursue independent research may be accepted to read for a research degree (MPhil/PhD) in Economics. Normally a high-level master's degree in Economics or equivalent is a prerequisite.

Ph.D. students complete an independent research project under the guidance of a supervisory team. The research is normally completed over a maximum period of 3 to 3.5 years (full-time) or 6 to 6.5 years (part-time).
