Financial Technology (FinTech) is an important emerging area that has been developing rapidly in recent years. It refers to the application of cutting-edge technologies and advanced analytics on various financial services, such as mobile banking, peer-to-peer lending, digital payments, blockchain, and cryptocurrencies, aiming to improve service efficiency, promote financial innovations, and increase end-user satisfaction.

The Ph.D. program is a research-oriented degree programme. It is designed to enable students to concentrate in a specialized field and to provide them with the opportunity to do original, fundamental research in that field. The programme prepares students for a teaching and/or research career in universities, research institutions, businesses and in the government.

Our Ph.D. program is similar in structure and content to those at other top universities in the world. Students are required to undergo rigorous course training in the first two years to build up a solid foundation of knowledge on economic theories, statistics/econometrics, finance, as well as accounting.

The Ph.D. Program follows a strong research-intensive tradition on the North American model. It is designed to enable students to gain a deep knowledge of management in general, to develop a concentration in a specialized field, and to provide opportunities for students to do significant original research in their chosen area. PhD students are offered intensive and targeted research training and exceptional collaboration opportunities with faculty to prepare them for their future careers in teaching and/or research.

With 12 regular academic staff, the Economics Department is large by Lingnan’s standards. Its members all hold PhDs from top universities internationally and now counts with world-renowned Professor Avinash Dixit from Princeton University as its Distinguished Adjunct Professor (spending periods of 6 to 8 weeks with us annually).

The DFinTech Programme aims to educate top executives and business entrepreneurs who are interested in understanding the FinTech impacts on various industries. It has been designed to integrate academic study and management practice in a way which will form a significant part of an individual’s business career.
