Westlake University’s Chemistry department is a pioneering, supportive, and innovative community of scholar-practitioners focused on building excellence between the chemical sciences and related branches of physical science, medicine, engineering, and material sciences. The doctoral program in Chemistry at Westlake University provides extensive research and training opportunities across the chemical sciences and related fields. Our graduate program prepares future scholars to be professional teachers and researchers at the highest level. Each graduate student is generally provided with teaching or research assistant fellowships for the duration of their studies. In addition, sufficient financial support at the department and school levels are offered to all students.
Scholarships and Funding
All admitted Ph.D. students to this program will receive a full tuition scholarship or a full tuition waiver and a monthly living allowance. Westlake University is committed to reducing the financial barriers for students so they can focus on their academic goals. We provide financial support for our doctoral students to cover their tuition, on-campus room and board rates, insurance premiums, and other living costs. Fellowships, scholarships, and grants are categorized according to their sources and include public funding, the University’s Fund, and social endowments.
International students are eligible for numerous scholarships from the national or provincial government.
Westlake University Graduate TA and RA Stipends
Westlake University Graduate Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistant positions receive paid stipends. These stipends are sponsored by the University and doctoral student supervisors. These stipends provide graduate students with remuneration for assistantships in teaching, administration, and research.
Applicants to the Ph.D. program in Chemistry can focus on one of the following five Research Fields:
Inorganic Chemistry; Analytical Chemistry; Organic Chemistry; Physical Chemistry; Polymer Chemistry and Physics.

*Note*: Doctoral dissertation topics for students in the Ph.D. program in Chemistry generally follow the research of the laboratory they work in.
Note*: Applicants to the School of Sciences Ph.D. program in Chemistry are greatly encouraged to contact the Faculty Supervisor of the laboratory they want to do research in before applying to the Ph.D. program. Once admitted into the Ph.D. program, doctoral students will be assigned to a laboratory and Faculty Supervisor according to their preferences listed in their admissions application materials. Each doctoral student’s Faculty Supervisor will act as a program mentor, advisor, laboratory supervisor, and doctoral dissertation chair.
