CAES is one of 18 schools and colleges that make up the University of Georgia. Small, upper-level classes allow students to connect easily with professors. University of Georgia Core Facilities provides state-of-the-art equipment and services to researchers at UGA, other universities, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and industry. These facilities use highly specialized scientific equipment, diagnostic tools, adaptable prototyping processes, and mechanical production shops.

Animal Health Research Center

A safe, secure, state-of-the-art facility enables scientists to study infectious microorganisms, parasites, and toxins in an environment safe for researchers, animals, and the public. One of the most technologically advanced biocontainment facilities in the United States, dedicated to studying infectious diseases that affect both animal and human health.

Bioexpression & Fermentation Facility

Maintains an array of equipment to speed the pace of research, development, and manufacturing. Areas of expertise include molecular biology, fermentation, protein purification, high-containment cell culture, and monoclonal antibodies.

Bio-Imaging Research Center

A multi-imaging suite designed to provide a full range of biological tissue imaging technologies, including a large-bore 3T scanner, a small-bore 7T scanner, an MR acclimation setup, and a research and development team. The electrophysiology suite houses multiple functional brain imaging technologies such as dense array EEG and an integrated MEG/EEG system. Basic phlebotomy service is also available.

Biomedical Microscopy Core

Houses state-of-the-art deconvolution, confocal, super-resolution, and light sheet fluorescence microscope systems useful for multiple applications, including live-cell imaging, high content analysis, and examination of fixed and immunolabeled cell and tissue samples. The facility provides expertise, training, and assistance to researchers who work on different model organisms.

CCRC Analytical Services

Offers analytical services for structural characterization of polysaccharides, proteins, and glycolipids derived from animal, plant, or microbial origin. Includes state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy to determine molecular structures of carbohydrates and proteins and to investigate protein-carbohydrate interactions. Also offers hands-on training courses on analytical techniques used to study complex carbohydrates.

Center for Applied Isotope Studies

Provides accelerator-based radiocarbon measurements and stable isotope, X-ray fluorescence, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analyses. The center has an established reputation as a pioneer in the development and application of analytical techniques, as a premier analytical laboratory, and as a technical training center.

Center for Drug Discovery

Supports the development of therapeutics through pre-clinical stage collaborations with extramural entities. Offers assistance in the development of cell-based and target-based assay, chemical dispensing, and archiving tasks, as well as a range of pre-clinical toxicology services. Has access to Opera high-content screening system and possesses a wide array of chemical libraries.

Clinical & Translational Research Unit

Supports investigators are conducting clinical and translational studies that advance the understanding, prevention, and treatment of human disease. For students and health sciences trainees, the unit provides opportunities to learn how laboratory discoveries are translated into improved patient outcomes.

Comparative Pathology Laboratory

Provides expert diagnostic and research pathology services to investigators using laboratory animals. Gross pathology, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, clinical pathology services, and phenotyping of genetically modified animals. Genetically modified mouse lines are available for cancer research.

Cytometry Shared Resource Laboratory

Provides researchers at UGA and across the scientific community with access to state-of-the-art flow cytometry analyzers, Luminex multiplexing instruments, an imaging flow cytometer, and flow cytometry cell sorters. Also provides expert advice and consultation for the design and analysis of flow experiments.

Georgia Advanced Computing Resource Center

Provides high-performance computing and networking infrastructure; a comprehensive collection of scientific, engineering, and business applications; and consulting and training services. GACRC specializes in Linux/UNIX system administration, storage administration, computational computing, virtualization, and database administration.

Georgia Electron Microscopy

Provides application of electron microscopy and related analytical methods for diverse research areas, including biology, biomedical sciences, plant biology, geology, chemistry, textiles, archaeology, engineering, physics, and nanotechnology/materials analysis.

Georgia Genomics & Bioinformatics Core

UGA’s core laboratory for nucleic acid sequencing and bioinformatics. Services encompass the range of genomic techniques, applications, and sequencing technologies, bioinformatics consultation on experimental design, selection of the appropriate sequencing platforms, and bioinformatics analyses.

Impact Evaluation Unit

Provides turn-key impact evaluation services in partnership with project leaders to document broader impacts of externally funded projects. Services include the design and delivery of impact evaluation frameworks, needs assessments, feasibility studies, process and outcome evaluations, and concept mapping for funded projects.

Instrument Design & Fabrication Shop

Designs, fabricates, repairs, or modifies new or existing equipment and machinery.

Integrated Bioscience & Nanotechnology Cleanroom

A 2,200-square-foot (Phase I) Class 100/1,000 part and a 1,000-square-foot (Phase II) Class 10,000 part. This is a multidisciplinary, nanotechnology-focused fabrication, characterization, and manipulation facility.

Proteomic & Mass Spectrometry

Equipped with a ThermoScientific Orbitrap Elite mass spectrometer for high-resolution and high-mass accuracy analysis; nano HPLC to analyze more complex protein mixtures; and a Bruker Autoflex MALDI for quick analysis of tryptic digests of pure proteins in solution or via in-gel digestion. An in-house version of Mascot for protein identification using researches proprietary or unique databases is available. The facility has other mass spectrometers for sample analysis.

Scientific Glass Blowing Shop

Creates a variety of standard and one-of-a-kind glass items and modifies commercial glassware.

Statistical Consulting Center

Provides statistical consultation and collaboration. The SCC’s faculty and students provide expert statistical assistance in all stages of quantitative research, from proposal and study design through programming and interpretation of results.

Survey Research Center

A nationally recognized polling operation with a primary focus on the state of Georgia. Conducts both live-interviewer surveys and online polls. In addition to conducting its statewide polls relating to Georgia politics and policy, also performs contract work for academic researchers, corporations, non-profits, and state and local government entities.

    First-Year Admissions

    UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) is the ideal place for students who want a tight-knit, family-oriented college experience with the benefits of a major university. Students can enter CAES as a freshman at the University of Georgia.

    To enroll in CAES as a freshman, a student must apply to UGA through the first-year applicant's process. A student can choose to apply Early Action or Regular Decision. Early Action applications focus on a student’s academic achievement, while Regular Decision applications focus on a holistic view of the student.

    Even if a student is planning to apply for freshman admission, they may fill out a transfer plan request if they are dual enrolled with a local college while in high school. This will allow students to work with UGA CAES advisors on necessary college coursework for their major at UGA.

    Early Action applications are due to UGA Office of Undergraduate Admissions by October 15, and regular decision applications are due by January 1.

    Transfer Admissions

    UGA CAES is the perfect place to experience personalized education while reaping the benefits of being connected with a large university. Students can transfer to any of the three CAES campus locations across Georgia: Athens, Griffin, or Tifton. Students interested in transferring to UGA CAES must meet the following requirements:

    • Athens, Griffin, and Tifton: Graduated from high school at least 12 months before the term of intended enrollment
    • Athens: Completed 30-59 credit hours and have a minimum of a 3.3 GPA OR
    • Athens, Griffin, and Tifton: Completed 60+ credit hours and have a minimum of a 2.8 GPA

    Completion of an associate's degree is encouraged. UGA maintains a core-to-core transfer agreement with University System of Georgia (USG) institutions and will likely accept all courses from these institutions.

    To determine if specific courses will transfer, students are encouraged to use the UGA Transfer Equivalency search system. If you are not transferring from a USG institution, please check the search system to be sure completed courses will transfer.

    UGA CAES strives to meet each student's individual educational goals and encourages students to consult with an academic advisor as early as possible to be certain prerequisites for their chosen major are met.

    Scholarships

    Each year, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) awards scholarships to students enrolled in our majors. This past year, CAES awarded over $830,000 in financial aid to the student body. There are additional scholarship opportunities through CAES Departments and the Griffin and Tifton extended campuses.

    Prospective Students Scholarship Program

    The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) has scholarship funds for prospective students interested in majoring within our Colleges, such as the CAES Alumni Associations Freshman Scholarships and the CAES Alumni Association Transfer Scholarships. This Prospective Students program is for incoming first-year and transfer students only. Students already attending UGA are not eligible for the program and are encouraged to instead apply for "College-wide Scholarships" and all other appropriate scholarship programs listed below. Application for the Prospective Students Scholarships program will be accepted through Friday, 17 March 2023.

    College-wide Scholarships

    CAES is committed to providing financial support to students enrolled in the college's majors. Apply online to be considered for all of these CAES general scholarships. Please note that incoming freshmen and transfer students should apply to the Prospective Students Scholarship Program listed above rather than this College-wide Scholarships program.

    Broder-Ackermann Global Citizen Award

    The Broder-Ackermann Global Citizen Award recognizes an undergraduate student in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences who has embraced global citizenship in their community through participation, promotion, and/or leadership of international initiatives. Global citizenship does not necessarily mean that you have traveled extensively, but rather that you take an active interest and involvement in cultures different from yours.

    Ratcliffe Scholars Program

    The Ratcliffe Scholars Program rewards forward-thinking CAES undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in immersive, hands-on learning experiences outside the confines of a traditional class setting. Eligible experiences may include internships, study abroad programs, research opportunities and any other experiential learning activities deemed appropriate by the selection committee. Ratcliffe Scholars receive a $5,000 scholarship and participate in enrichment activities as a cohort throughout the year.

    Rural Scholars Program

    The Rural Scholars Program is open to students from Georgia's rural communities majoring in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The program will welcome 1-3 new students into a cohort each year (must be incoming, first-year students). Each Scholar will receive an annual academic scholarship of $7,000, renewable for up to four years. The Rural Scholars Program will select outstanding students from rural communities who have excelled academically, have shown strong leadership abilities and community service, and seek a degree in UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Through a cohort model, staff support, and co-curricular programming, the Rural Scholars Program will provide an extraordinary experience to participating students as they pursue a degree. Scholars may have the opportunity to participate in additional activities to enhance the college experience, such as the Freshman College Summer Experience and experiential learning opportunities, supported by grants that allow students to learn outside the classroom. Applicants to the Rural Scholars Program must apply for admission to the University of Georgia.

    International Travel Scholarship

    International travel scholarships support CAES student travel to study abroad and international internship programs. Students may apply in one of two application cycles, according to their departure date. Students departing on an international program during the current fall or spring semester of the following year should apply between August 1 - November 1. Students departing during the Maymester or summer semester should apply between December 1 - March 1. Applications received by the deadline date will be given full consideration.
