How to apply for a visa to study in China?

You should apply for an “X” (study) visa at your local Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General with the required documents.

X1 Visa is issued to those who intend to study for a period of more than 180 days. The X1 Visa generally permits only one entry. Students holding an X1 Visa must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days upon arrival in the Chinese mainland to allow multiple entries.

X2 Visa is issued to those who intend to study for a period of no more than 180 days (including 180 days). The X2 Visa generally permits only one entry. Students holding an X2 Visa are not able to apply for a Residence Permit and thus cannot exit and re-enter the Chinese mainland upon arrival.

What documents are required for a study visa application?

    1. Visa Application for Study in China (JW202)
    2. Admission Letter issued by CUHKSZ
    3. Valid original passport

The visa authority may, in light of specific cases, require an applicant to submit additional application materials.

You must enter China with the original copies of the above documents. A person coming to China with other types of passports, or visas or without the original documents will not be able to register with the institution, nor will they be able to apply for residence in China.

How to apply for a residence permit after entry?

The residence permit for study is issued to persons who pursue long-term (exceeding 180 days) studies in China.

The X visa is for a single entry. If you would like to visit outside the Chinese Mainland during your study at CUHKSZ, you need to apply for a Residence Permit for Foreigners within 30 days of arrival in China to allow multiple entries.

Note: A foreigner holding a residence permit for study shall not engage in any off-campus work-study or internship unless the information prescribed in the preceding paragraph is specified in his or her residence permit.

The MPhil-PhD programme of CUHKSZ will offer scholarships and teaching & research allowances to outstanding applicants (please refer to the formal offer letter for final information).
