The School of Engineering and Physical Sciences places a very high value on enabling people to obtain a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) degree by research and is pleased to be able to extend this facility to students on the Dubai Campus.
Initially, those with an interest in undertaking a project in the broad area of energy are encouraged to apply. This may include renewable energy, energy utilization, and energy conservation as well as improved materials for energy production and conversion (for example, the development of nanocomposite carbide coatings).
PhD study on the Dubai Campus will enable students to work with staff and students in Dubai in collaboration with a research group in Edinburgh performing high value and fundamental research in engineering. Students will be working under the supervision of an expert academic supervisor based at the Dubai Campus and supported by a second supervisor in Edinburgh. In addition to time spent doing research project work, students will engage with scientific literature and participate in research group discussions and meetings using electronic communications. On completion of the research project, students spend some six months 'writing up' to produce a final PhD. Once the thesis has been submitted, internal and external academics will examine the student’s work and knowledge of the PhD subject....

The study program is realized within the framework of the kinanthropology field of science. Kinanthropology is a multidisciplinary field of science that deals with the complex effects of intentional and spontaneous physical activity on human personality development in the bio-psycho-social context and in conditions of physical education and sports, physiotherapy, health physical education including their effective management.
The aim of doctoral studies in kinanthropology is the scientific preparation of experts to ensure their ability in regards both to independent research, scientific and pedagogical activities and to practical applications of acquired knowledge and skills in accordance with the needs of the practice. It is an interdisciplinary study program that requires the variability of approach to task solving reflecting the entire thematic spread of this scientific discipline. A system approach is accentuated during the course of study with an emphasis on the specificity of kinanthropology, both in terms of methodology and content. Doctoral studies in the kinanthropology program are highly individualized, based on the type of the dissertation thesis project and also on the field of undergraduate studies. The preparation program is selected to develop the student’s theoretical and methodological readiness in relation to his/her dissertation specialization with the aim of systematic scientific activity in the chosen research problem....

The study program is focused on the problematic of didactics of physics and general problems of physics. It stems from scientific disciplines such as physics, didactics of physics, pedagogy, and psychology. The main goal is to provide students with a complex overview of the didactics of physics, teach them independent scientific practice in this field and allow for a deeper understanding of some parts of physics. This program naturally follows the master’s program Physics Education for Secondary Schools which, out of the whole Charles University, can be studied solely at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. It is therefore natural that this faculty also has a doctorate program focused on didactics of physics and general problems of physics. This study program is unique by being the only one at our university to offer doctorate-level studies in the field of didactics of physics....

New Frontiers Ph.D. projects aim to expand collective intelligence and contribute to the solutions to global challenges through original research investigations. These projects often sit at the interface of art & design, digital technology, education, and science, however, this is not strictly mandatory. For example, past projects have involved learning with games, teaching through research, communication technologies, participatory science, art/design as a means to communicate science, etc.
New Frontiers Ph.D. projects aim to contribute to the solutions to global challenges through novel research investigations. They contribute to mobilizing the collective intelligence towards solutions to societal goals, such as those set forth by the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The original contribution of the work addresses questions that are relevant in a research context. The Ph.D. supervisor, Thesis Advisory Committee, dissertation reviewers, and defense jury provide the guidance and details on acceptable content and format of the dissertation....
