Our graduate program offers a PhD in philosophy in four core areas, Molecular / Cellular Biology, Neuroscience, Ecology / Systematics and Evolution / Genetics. The PhD in Philosophy is offered through the Intercampus Doctorate Program of the University of Puerto Rico, administered by us.

The Department maintains close links with the Campus of Medical Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico, the Institute of Neurobiology, the Institute of Tropical Ecosystem Studies in the UPR-RP and the Department of Environmental Studies of the UPR-RP, which considerably expands the opportunities for our graduate students

The Department has modern facilities and laboratory resources and uses traditional and non-traditional model bodies to address various issues. In addition, the enormous diversity of the ecosystems of Puerto Rico and their easy access, translate into research opportunities in the Caribbean and continental neotropics. The University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras is a member of the Organization of Tropical Studies and students are encouraged to apply for OTS courses.... [-]

QBM seeks to train a cohort of young scientists who, while firmly anchored in their home discipline, are well versed in multiple approaches and styles of thought. The goal is for the students to get comfortable in communicating across traditional boundaries, especially across the divide between experiment and quantitative theory – to become, in effect, scientifically bi- or multilingual. To this end, the school offers an integrated interdisciplinary Ph.D. program that consists of three main components:

An interdisciplinary research project which combines concepts and methods from different fields. A substantial program of formal course work with a general and an individual component centered around an interdisciplinary core course that covers key problems in bioscience from multiple perspectives. Further activities to enhance students’ other transferable skills to succeed in science as a competitive profession. ... [-]

The Department offers the degree Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemistry which is designed to better prepare doctoral-level chemists to enjoy productive careers in industrial laboratories, research foundations or academic institutions. In addition to the traditional Ph.D. curriculum, this program mandates that the student acquire the working knowledge of the type of research conducted in industry and of the constraints (both practical and philosophical) under which it is carried out.

To facilitate this, each student is required to spend one semester in an industrial or government research laboratory internship. This internship is obtained for the student by the Department and every effort is made to match the type of work and the company with the student's interests. This is an important part of the student's training that may also open up avenues for future employment. If a student already has industrial research experience, this internship requirement may be waived if the student so desires.... [-]

PhD in Mathematical Modeling

Program overview

Please Note: This program is currently recruiting its first class, which will begin in fall 2017.

Mathematical modeling is the process of developing mathematical descriptions, or models, of real-world systems. These models can be linear or nonlinear, discrete or continuous, deterministic or stochastic, and static or dynamic, and they enable investigating, analyzing, and predicting the behavior of systems in a wide variety of fields. Every mathematical modeling enterprise has four aspects: the content of the application field, the mathematical formulation and analysis, the analytical and computational methods (which often involve high-performance computing), and the interpretation and analysis of the results. Through extensive research, graduates of this program will have the expertise not only to use the tools of mathematical modeling in various application settings but also to contribute in creative and innovative ways to solve complex interdisciplinary problems and to communicate effectively with domain experts in various fields.... Research in the School of Biosciences encompasses four broad themes and is supported by a core group of researchers in bioactive compounds (Drug Discovery & Development Team):

Infectious Diseases The rich biodiversity of Malaysia enables the discovery of novel compounds to fight infectious diseases. At Taylor’s University, the identified natural compounds will be examined for their bioactive properties as well as their mode of action. In addition to the antimicrobial research, the host-pathogen interaction research is focused to understand the disease manifestation in host cells. Non-communicable Diseases Diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, a sedentary lifestyle and stress have contributed to greater incidences of heart disease, respiratory disease, diabetes and cancer, among others. Available drugs for these diseases are often accompanied by undesirable side effects, not selective enough or simply too expensive. Hence, this cluster targets the discovery of novel lead compounds and to scientifically validate natural remedies for lifestyle-related chronic diseases. Environmental Research Research conducted in this cluster focuses on bioremediation, taxonomic identification of marine flora and to facilitate the development of mechanisms or processes that are in compliance with environmental laws. It will target improvement in resources savings, waste disposal and resolve environmental stress issues. In addition, researchers in this cluster also provide consultation and training in environmental management systems. Food Science and Nutrition The broader aim of research in this cluster is to study the fundamentals and applied aspects of new functional foods, medical foods and nutraceuticals as well as new technologies that facilitate the development of novel consumer...
