The School of Engineering and Physical Sciences places a very high value on enabling people to obtain a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) degree by research and is pleased to be able to extend this facility to students on the Dubai Campus. Initially, those with an interest in undertaking a project in the broad area of energy are encouraged to apply. This may include renewable energy, energy utilization, and energy conservation as well as improved materials for energy production and conversion (for example, the development of nanocomposite carbide coatings).

The Doctoral Program in Nuclear Chemistry is intended for graduates of chemistry disciplines of the master course to extend their knowledge, especially of radiochemistry. In its present form, radiochemistry comprises both extensive basic and applied research monitoring chemical and physicochemical aspects of nuclear transformations, as well as methods using radionuclides to tackle chemical problems of a general nature.

The Doctoral Program in Applications of Natural Sciences and in Mathematical Engineering is open to graduates holding a Master's Degree who want to extend their scholarly qualification in a relevant field of study. The research-oriented program provides in-depth training for a high level of professional competence in the chosen area (see below) and the ability to develop and use independently the professional knowledge and skills gained in research.

Providing sustainable energy for a rapidly growing world population is a grand challenge of the 21st century. Power generation and environmental emissions are a technical, social and political issue that affects economies and the environment on local, national and global scales.

The predecessor of the Mechanical Engineering in China University of Petroleum is the original discipline of petroleum mechanical engineering founded in 1952 at the department of petroleum engineering in Tsinghua University, which is the earliest established oil field mechanical discipline.

Oil and Gas Field Development Engineering is a discipline that aims to understand the fundamental properties of oil and gas reservoir and the law of oil and gas flow in porous media, build the effective displacement system to develop the oil and gas field properly and extract the oil and gas to the ground surface economically.

Oil and gas wells are physical and informational conduits in the exploration and development of underground oil and gas resources. This major is aimed at investigating the knowledge related to the construction (drilling and completion), measurement, usage and maintenance of wells.
