The purpose of the qualification is to develop an engineer with advanced abilities in applying fundamental engineering sciences and/design and synthesis, and related principles independently to specific problems of society at large. One of the main objectives of this process is to develop an advanced capability to conduct fundamental engineering research of an original nature. It also promotes a lifelong learning approach and an aptitude for training other students in similar fields.

Identify, assess, formulate, interpret, analyze and solve original engineering research/development problems creatively and innovatively by applying relevant advanced fundamental knowledge of i.e.Mathematics, Basic Science and Engineering Sciences in the chosen field of research. Plan and manage advanced engineering research projects, demonstrating fundamental knowledge, understanding, and insight into the principles, methodologies, and concepts that constitute socially responsible (to local and other communities) engineering research/development in the chosen field of research practice.
