The doctoral program in Chemical sciences is designed for highly qualified professionals with the intention of pursuing their careers in research-oriented institutions, assuming managing positions in chemical and chemistry-related industries, public services, or continuing their research in an academic environment. After completing the program, graduates will acquire the ability to critically analyse, evaluate and create complex new ideas. They will be able to communicate in their scientific area and beyond and to promote scientific advancements in science and technology at the academic and applicative levels. The doctoral program in Chemical sciences is organized by the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology. The program covers three orientations: Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Chemical engineering. The main emphasis of the doctoral study is on research and research-related the activities. A special characteristic of the program is the compulsory participation of students in lectures with guest lecturers and the compulsory preparation of the corresponding reports. A selection of modular elective courses is also available, offering students the latest scientific achievements in particular areas and adapted to the needs of the individual student.

Research groups within the Inorganic Chemistry section formulate, and subsequently develop the applications of, coordination complexes containing main group and transition metals. The metals and types of ligand are numerous, and hence the applications are diverse. Research in Inorganic Chemistry therefore often lies at the interface with other scientific disciplines, including other chemistry sub-disciplines, physics, materials chemistry, and medical research.

The School of Chemistry has developed a particular strength in Physical Organic Chemistry, with a research group dedicated to this exciting area of study. As part of the Chemistry (PhD/MPhil) program, students can conduct their research within this group.

The purpose of the Ph.D. program in Chemistry is to prepare students through the execution and completion of a substantial research project to become mature, independent scientists who themselves are then capable of the design, initiation, and execution of their own original projects in academic or industrial environments.

Scientific computation is among the fastest-growing multidisciplinary research area and it serves as a bridge between the traditional domains of theoretical and experimental sciences. Computation research covers many areas in science and engineering.

The Nano Science and Technology (NSNT) Program, defined on the basis of the three above elements, aims to educate students with the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge to contribute to the long-term nanoscale research and development, which will lead to potential breakthroughs in areas such as materials and manufacturing, nanoelectronics, medicine and healthcare, environment, energy, chemicals, and biotechnology.

The Ph.D. program in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems educates scientists with broad knowledge of micro- and nanosystem technologies. This becomes an increasingly important part of our everyday life, in all sorts of "smart systems", as for example sensors integrated into mobile phones, equipment for medical diagnosis, for monitoring the environment and for instrumentation in industrial processes.

The awarded degree, in recognition of the completion of the requirements of this program, is "Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry”. The study plan for the Ph.D. Program in Chemistry shall consist of a total of at least 54 credit hours. The Ph.D. students must complete all degree requirements in a minimum of six (6) and a maximum of twelve (12) semesters after matriculation.
