A Doctor of Philosophy degree, short Ph.D is an advanced academic degree earned in various fields, signifying major interests and accomplishments in research.
Of the physical sciences, chemistry is the branch most concerned with the unique properties of matter. These characteristics are often determined by studying the certain intermolecular forces within the matter itself. These interactions can form different substances altogether through chemical reactions.

The Department offers the degree Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemistry which is designed to better prepare doctoral-level chemists to enjoy productive careers in industrial laboratories, research foundations or academic institutions. In addition to the traditional Ph.D. curriculum, this program mandates that the student acquire the working knowledge of the type of research conducted in industry and of the constraints (both practical and philosophical) under which it is carried out.
To facilitate this, each student is required to spend one semester in an industrial or government research laboratory internship. This internship is obtained for the student by the Department and every effort is made to match the type of work and the company with the student's interests. This is an important part of the student's training that may also open up avenues for future employment. If a student already has industrial research experience, this internship requirement may be waived if the student so desires....

The primary goal of the Ph.D. course in chemistry is the training in order to obtain proper skills in the chemistry field, to carry on an independent and autonomous research activity. Such skills will be important to be spent in many different situations and institutions, in particular, public research institutions (like Universities and Research Institutes) or private companies. In this respect Ph.D., students will be trained with a continuous and intense experimental research activity as well as specific high-level courses, in order to be competitive at the international level. The future Ph.D. will be trained with all experimental and theoretical tools necessary to manage general problems which will be encountered when developing new chemical compounds or processes, as well as their industrial implications. Special care will be devoted to the international mobility opportunities and to the ability to present and rationalize the results in an effective manner....

The purpose of the PhD programme in Chemistry is to prepare students through the execution and completion of a substantial research project to become mature, independent
Chemistry as a discipline is growing and changing rapidly. The traditional divisions of Chemistry into analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry no longer reflect the dynamic and multidisciplinary nature of the field. Chemistry is, in fact, the "central science", having relevance in areas such as molecular biology, molecular physics, materials science, molecular engineering, biotechnology, environmental science, and drug design.
As a postgraduate student in the Department of Chemistry at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, you will have the chance to study in programmes that reflect the current, central, position of Chemistry and you will learn from diverse, innovative faculty at the forefront of their fields of research....

The aim of the PhD study is to provide the graduates with a deep knowledge of classical and modern technologies for processing of different types of fossil fuels and also their usage in power and energetic engineering respecting environmental protection. Environmentally friendly methods of energy utilization of biomass and the use of alternative fuels in transport and energy is another important area of the PhD students training. The classical technologies of oil, coal and natural gas treatment and processing are discussed together with modern methods of their chemical use. Environmental aspects of different fuels processing and fuel products utilization are studied. Students are encouraged to work independently in the laboratory, to study the scientific and professional literature and to present their results. Student participation in national and international conferences is required and supported by the Faculty....

The goal of the doctoral study program (DSP) is to educate excellent experts in the physics of nanostructures and nanomaterials suited for the future carrier in basic and applied research in nanotechnologies. The main pillars of the DSP are the theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics and physics of surfaces, advanced experimental and theoretical methods for studying the nanostructures, and smart technologies for preparation of nanostructures and nanomaterials. The DSP is of highly interdisciplinary nature and fits the cutting-edge topics of current physical and material sciences like spintronics, nanoelectronics, nanomedicine, and quantum computing. It is the only DSP in the Faculty of mathematics and physics, which integrates various areas of physics and materials research with outreach to chemistry, biology, and medicine. In coherence with the tradition of the education, in the Faculty of mathematics and physics, the ultimate goal of the education in the DSP is to provide a deep theoretical background for understanding the key physical principles and phenomena underlying the unique properties of nanostructures and nanomaterials....

The Master in Molecular Nanoscience and Nanotechnology constitutes the period of formation of the Doctorate in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The universities of Valencia, Alicante, Jaume I, La Laguna and Castilla La Mancha participate in this doctorate.
This doctoral program has the Mention to Excellence (MEE2011-0370) granted by the General Secretariat of Universities of the Ministry of Education according to Resolution of October 6, 2011.
In recent years, certain scientific areas such as supramolecular chemistry, molecular biology, surface physics and low temperatures have reached a remarkable development in our country. Research groups have been formed that have achieved an excellent competitive position in the international area. In addition, in a natural way, the very object of research of these disciplines has been converging towards what is called Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Of the strategic importance in ID of these areas, the fact that they have been prioritized in all the National, European and International Programs of all developed countries is a good account. In these physical areas, chemists, biologists, doctors and engineers are in charge of obtaining, manipulating, organizing, studying and taking advantage of the properties of nano-sized objects. Maintaining today and in the future a truly competitive international position in some areas of Nanoscience, however, requires a level of competence that can only be achieved with a thematic focus and with adequate training of research personnel that allows them to acquire the multidisciplinary knowledge that these areas they need....
